The Pinal County Board of Supervisors voted to deny Vermaland’s proposed La Osa Energy Center during its Aug. 26 meeting.
La Osa was expected to be the largest data center in the state at the time of its announcement. AZBEX has extensively covered this project as it went through the planning stages.
The Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval of a rezoning for the site during its April meeting. The development faced extensive opposition prior to its first scheduled appearance before the Board of Supervisors in May.
Developers then requested a continuance and downscaled the project to be more palatable for the opposing parties. The number of data centers was reduced from 59 to 11.
The Aug. 26 meeting featured a nearly five-hour public comment period and 123 letters in opposition. It also received 16 letters in support. During the public comment period, the Board expressed interest in implementing more extensive data center regulations. (Source: Phoenix Business Journal)
