The University of Arizona’s capital plan for the year has won approval from the Arizona Board of Regents.
The plan includes five new project areas totaling $160.9M and consisting of:
- Deferred maintenance,
- Technology modernization,
- Modernizing and maintaining research facilities,
- Improving campus safety and
- Modernizing classrooms, student spaces and cultural venues.
The $55M deferred maintenance allocation includes upgrading fire alarm systems, ensuring elevator code compliance, plumbing repairs, street repairs, utility infrastructure upgrades and building automation. System revenue bonds will provide $45M of the total funding.
UA will finance its $17.6M campus-wide technology modernization plan, which includes replacing outdated technology and establishing better connectivity for teaching, research and operations.
The University will also finance its $52.3M plan to modernize lab spaces and upgrade infrastructure in the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.
Improving campus safety focuses on efficiency improvements through expanding analytics and a “scalable security infrastructure. The $15M cost will be financed.”
The plan to modernize student spaces and other aspects of campus life has a total price tag of $21.02M, of which $20.07M will be financed.
The larger 2029-2031 plan includes high priority building and construction renewal project costs of $183.5M. That plan has not yet been approved.
While individual projects and specific dollar amounts were not identified, key components of the building and construction plan include deferred maintenance, lab space modernization, renovating the Arizona State Museum, improving campus infrastructure, upgrading intercollegiate sports facilities and expanding campus housing.
