1. The American Public Works Association announced its Project of the Year Award winners. Arizona recipients include:
- Disaster or Emergency Construction/Repair, $25M-$75M: Rawhide Wash Flood Hazard Mitigation CMAR; Flood Control District of Maricopa County,
- Environment, less than $5M: Santa Cruz River Wildlife Ramp; Pima County Regional Flood Control District and
- Transportation, $5M-$25M: Combs Road and Kenworthy Road Improvements; Pinal County Development Services.
Groundbreakings
2. R.D. Olson Construction has broken ground on the $116M Senoa Resort & Spa at 150 Schnebly Hill Road in Sedona. The 70-key resort will span 11.5 acres and include 29 free-standing structures, a 5.5KSF spa and 3.2KSF multipurpose space, along with additional resort amenities. R.D. Olson Development and Senoa Investment Partners are developing the project. AO is the architect of record, and WATG is the entitlement architect. Opening is planned for late 2028.
3. A 269.1KSF Class A industrial project is underway on 16.7 acres at 1703 S. Arizona Ave. in Chandler. Seefried Industrial Properties and WDP Partners are developing the two-building property, which will include 69.3KSF and 199.8KSF buildings. ARCO is serving as general contractor, and CBRE is leading leasing and marketing efforts. The project is scheduled for completion in Q3 2027.
4. The City of San Luis temporarily closed the San Luis Senior Center at 790 Juan Sanchez Blvd. on Sept. 21 for renovations and facility improvements. Construction is expected to continue through December. The project is intended to improve the facility’s capacity and functionality before the center reopens.
Progress Reports
5. The completion date for the 250KSF Fire ’n’ Ice Sports Arena and adjacent 150-room Fire ’n’ Ice Hotel has been pushed back from the previously planned September opening due to electrical and water line issues. Approximately 70% of identified water leaks within the facility have been addressed, and crews are continuing work on the remaining issues. The sports complex will include two NHL-sized ice rinks, an additional training rink and five multi-sport courts. A new opening date has not yet been announced.
6. Provident Industrial is preparing for a late-October slab pour at Valencia Airport Center, a 162.2KSF speculative industrial building at 3430 E. Valencia Road in Tucson. The project is being developed on 9.6 acres near Valencia and Palo Verde roads, which an affiliated entity acquired for $3.45M in June.
7. DCS Contracting has completed heavy civil work on Phases 3A and 3B at Blossom Rock at Superstition Vistas, a 135-acre master-planned community at 7101 S. Ironwood Dr. in Apache Junction. The $2.2M project included fine grading and paving improvements supporting the community’s residential development, along with sidewalk, drainage and neighborhood park work. Brookfield Arizona Development LLC is the developer, and Wood Patel & Associates is the design partner.
Completions
8. Headwaters Group will welcome the first residents Oct. 1 at Aspendale Scottsdale, its age-55-plus multifamily community on Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd. in Scottsdale. The development includes 161 apartment-style units and 10 semi-detached casitas. The project is Headwaters Group’s first Aspendale community outside Colorado.
9. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for Freeberg Industrial Fabrication’s new 160KSF manufacturing facility at 5610 N. Sunland Gin Road in Eloy. The site more than doubles the company’s total footprint and will support assembly of large-scale electro-mechanical systems. Freeberg plans to invest up to $12M in equipment, facility fit-out and related improvements through 2027. Newport Commercial Partners and FCL worked on the project.
10. City of Hope Medical Group of Arizona opened the 23KSF City of Hope Cancer Center Prescott at 5430 Landmark Lane in Prescott. The facility includes 17 exam rooms and 36 infusion bays and provides medical oncology, radiation oncology and breast surgical oncology services. A grand opening celebration is scheduled for Sept. 30.
11. Avnet Inc. has opened its new 156KSF global headquarters at 2150 E. Warner Road in Tempe following a year-long renovation of the former GoDaddy office at ASU Research Park. More than 500 employees are based at the two-story facility, which was renovated to provide updated office and collaboration space.
12. LGE Design Build has completed All Copy’s new Arizona headquarters in Chandler. The nearly 40KSF, two-level facility includes a parts reclamation area and storage mezzanine with a material elevator.
13. StayAPT Suites opened its first Southwest location Aug. 31 at 888 E. Plaza Circle in Yuma. The apartment-style hotel features suites with full kitchens, living areas and private bedrooms, along with an outdoor courtyard and other amenities. The property is located near I-8.
