A reflection of a world we donโt know. A space mission to a metal asteroid.ย Autonomous vehicles.ย A new spin onย Arizonaโsย Five Cs.ย A new โahaโ moment. Artful neighborhoods.ย ย
ULI Arizonaโs 13thย annualย Trendsย Day, held at theย J.W. Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spaย andย titled โInform Inspire Involve,โ highlighted a theme thatย some of the best ideas to build us up are not just on earth, butย are also inย the way we think.ย ย
Diane Swonk,ย Chiefย Economistย withย Grant Thornton LLP, opened by saying the world seems a little different than it did a year and half ago.ย ย
โItโs a reflection of a world we donโt know,โ she said. โA mirror reflection of an alternative universe.โย
One of her concerns:ย Elected leadersย whoย act like adolescents.ย
โThose are not the things I want,โ she said. โWhat I want isย the attainment of women and a healthy economy.ย I want to vote for people who think about the future and think about children.โย
The first quick hit, โEducation and Innovation โ The Inevitable Space Future,โ blew away the audience. It was led by Lindy Elkins-Tanton, project leader for theย Psycheโฏmission, a journey to a unique metal asteroid orbiting the sun between Mars and Jupiter. She is the director ofย Arizona State Universityโsย School of Earth and Space Exploration.ย
โItโs beyond the future of asteroid mining,โย saidย Elkins-Tanton, whoย alsoย took part in the fireside chat, โEducation and Mind-Blowing Innovation.โย โAt the heart of it is inspiration and a greater vision of us as a species and how we continue to explore.โย
In โEmbracing Technology: Autonomous Vehicles and the Urban Environment,โ we were told to brace for few parking spots and the human factor being taken out ofย theย drivingย equation. There is encouraging news, however.ย GPECโs Chris Camacho saidย groundbreakingย technology in autonomous vehicles is being tested right here in Arizona.ย ย
โWe have the chance to become a national brand,โ he predicted. โWorking together as one region, the common denominator will beย connectivity. The future is coming upon us quickly. Our goal is building our economy with new IP service and selling it to the world.โย
Arizonaโs newย Five Csย are:ย community, cause, creativity, commitmentย and capital. The role of the public and private sector will be a part of Arizonaโs success moving into the future. People want to stay closer to home. This leads us to have urban cores with a suburban environment.ย
โItโs a new form of American city,โ said panelist Lorenzo Perez, co-founder ofย Venue Partners. โWe are adapting. With that comes great development opportunities. Human resource department heads are now dictating what businesses are coming to Phoenix or not.โย
Keynote speaker and global futurist Jackย Uldrichย shared the ultimateย โAHAโ moments: awareness, humilityย and action.ย ย
โIn this confusing time, trends affect us,โ Uldrich said. โAugmented reality. Robotics. The Internet of Things. AI. Gene sequencing.โย
The final three panels of the day all hit close to home: arts, culture, and philanthropy; the Rio Salado re-imagined; and how housing builds communities.ย
In wrapping up Trends Day 2018, Tim Sullivan ofย Meyers Researchย and Arizona State Senatorย Bob Worsley exchanged insights andย reminded the audience that Arizona needs to be open for business.ย
โGreat ideas should comeย toย Arizona,โ Sullivan said.ย ย
