The Mohave County Board of Supervisors has ended a proposal to find a new location for the county fairgrounds and has directed staff to develop a master plan for the fairgrounds’ current location.
Earlier this year County staff had proposed a Recreation of Public Purposes application to the Bureau of Land Management for 376 acres near Golden Valley. Some Golden Valley residents complained, and members of an ad hoc committee remained focused on the location rather than site amenities.
Following the ad hoc committee’s July 18th report to the Board, the decision was made to pursue a master plan for the current location on Fairgrounds Blvd. in Kingman.
The committee report included a wishlist for five anchor venues (motorsports, equine and livestock, expositions and community events, carnival and concessions and a BMX park) that would take a minimum of 230 acres.
Supporting facilities, including administration, parking, hotels and utilities would have taken another 70 acres.
After County staff creates the master plan for the current location, Board members may decide whether to keep the fairgrounds in place or look into other site options.
The 73-acre current location limits the options as to what types of events may be hosted, according to staff, who said the site will need major improvements or a new option must be pursued. Minimum improvements will be undertaken in the interim. (Source)
