The City of Mesa Transportation Department is requesting the creation of a three-year pilot program focusing on small-scale transportation projects.
The program would utilize $3M each year on projects like biking trails or pedestrian crossings. The request comes as the City has previously failed to identify the proper funding for several of these smaller projects.
The delegation of funds is intended to streamline smaller projects instead of having to wait for grants or bonds. The annual $3M budget would come from reimbursement money for Maricopa Association of Governments transportation projects.
The pilot program would be part of Mesaβs Capital Improvement Program. Certain projects include the Eastern Canal shared-use path from Lindsay to McKellips, bike lanes on Thomas Road between Higley Road and Power Road, and a pedestrian hybrid beacon at Eastmark Parkway and Palladium Drive. These programs combine for less than $3M.
Projects that benefit from the program are typically too small for most transportation bonds. The Department is proposing the program be part of its 2026-27 Fiscal Year budget, which starts in July.
The proposed budget totals $58.9M. This marks a 6.7% increase year-over-year. (Source)
