Facing a substantialโฏreductionโฏinโฏnext year’s revenue due toย COVID-19, theย Rio Nuevo Boardโฏapproved a break-evenโฏbudget reflecting an estimated $6Mย reduction in annual state tax revenue.โฏThe Districtโฏhas been dramatically impactedโฏby COVID-19 related businessโฏclosuresโฏand the subsequent economic slowdown.โฏย
The Districtโฏended the year with a little over $6Mย cash on hand and has elected to hold those funds as a reserve while watching the current and future revenue trends.ย
A number of previouslyโฏapproved projects have been put on hold while revenue stabilizes.โฏย
Additionally,โฏthe Boardโฏallocated zero dollars for marketing and sponsorshipโฏsupport for downtown centricโฏevents.โฏHistorically, the District has spent on average approximatelyโฏ$1M a year supporting such events.โฏChairmanย FletcherโฏMcCuskerย offered to revisitโฏthe budget monthlyโฏto look for opportunities to continue to encourageโฏdowntown events and development.ย
The Board did ratify about $35Kย in glass repairโฏexpendituresโฏfrom the recent vandalism to downtown storefronts.ย
Many of the District’sโฏcurrentโฏconstructionโฏprojects are described asโฏPublic/Private Partnerships where the funding has been secured from private lenders and therefore are notโฏaffectedโฏby state revenue reductions.โฏThe Bautista,ย 75 East Broadway, theย Tucson ConventionโฏCenterย renovation, and theย One South Churchย hotel project ($280M) areโฏexpectedโฏto proceedโฏin the coming year.ย
