The City of Mesa recently reviewed plans for the development of three new hangars at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, at its July 9 Design Review Board meeting.
Winton Architects, Inc., on behalf of developer, Sun State Builders, is proposing to develop three hangars of various sizes south of East Ray Road and east of Power Road at 5559 S. Sossaman Road. The location is adjacent to the taxi lane, close to the runway.
The project will be built as speculative offices for prospective tenants and will be developed in two phases. The first phase, or Hangar C, will consist of a 115.2KSF building with a maximum height of 39 feet. The second phase will house Hangars A and B. Hangar A will total 33.6KSF with a 35-foot building height while Hangar B will total 36.4KSF with a 37-foot building height. All three hangars will be physically tied together as one building.
“The buildings will be a mixture of preengineered metal and masonry,” according to the documents submitted to the city. “The entries for each building will be two-story glass, masonry and steel canopy.”
The documents go on to state that, “Accent colors will tie all the buildings together as one, along with horizontal elements between each building.”
Vehicular parking will be provided on the front side of the hangars and overhead doors will provide access into each hangar. The plans propose a total of 141 parking spaces for the whole development. According to the documents, parking constraints are tight because of the “odd shaped lot.”
Landscaping around the building is expected to stay consistent with the airport’s current landscape theme and the project proposes future capability for a common use fuel tank and pumping station.
