The Tempe City Council has approved $23M in improvements for Tempe Diablo Stadium.
The first phase of the overall renovation plan will feature a new Major/Minor League clubhouse, a player development area and a performance lab. There will also be an onsite kitchen, team dining area, weight and locker rooms, meeting space and an office area.
Work is expected to begin in April and to be finished before next year’s Spring Training season.
The Phase I project was initially estimated at $20.9M. Tempe will provide $10.9M. The Los Angeles Angels had initially pledged $10M but will also cover any overages now that the cost estimate has grown to $23M.
Phase II is expected to begin in 2025 or 2026 and will feature an estimated $30M renovation of the overall stadium. Funding for Phase II will come through a future General Obligation bond that will require voter approval.
Improvements in Phase II are expected to include seating renovations and shading, a new scoreboard, extended lawn seating, improved restrooms and a retail area.
The Angels agreed to hold their Spring Training at the stadium through 2035 as part of the 2021 improvement agreement. The team also has two five-year extension options, which would carry its residency through 2045.
The general contractor is M.A. Mortenson Company. The Angels will oversee the construction through a representative. (Source)
