Groundbreakings
1. The City of Scottsdale is beginning construction on a $24.8M improvement project along Thomas Road from 56th Street to 73rd Street in Scottsdale. Initial work includes a new sewer line and rehabilitation or replacement of existing manholes ahead of roadway reconstruction planned for summer 2027. The larger project will reconstruct the roadway, add a right-turn lane at Thomas Road and 68th Street and include traffic signal, drainage and pedestrian ramp improvements.
2. McCarthy Building Companies Inc. broke ground on the renovation of a 12-acre former hotel at 2100 S. Priest Dr. in Tempe for its McCarthy Anchor Campus. SmithGroup designed the employee training and leadership campus, which will include classrooms, breakout spaces, lodging and other amenities. McCarthy purchased the property in January and expects to open the campus in early 2028.

3. Multiple border wall construction projects are underway or planned across Arizona. Sundt Construction has a $443.1M U.S. Customs and Border Protection contract for 13 miles of primary barrier and 45 miles of secondary barrier in western Pima County, spanning Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and part of Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge. The work will create two parallel 30-foot-tall walls with an enforcement zone between them. It has a potential completion date of Aug. 31, 2028. Fisher Sand and Gravel is working under a $1.5B contract for 21 miles of primary barrier and 91 miles of secondary barrier from west of Sasabe to Coronado National Memorial. Fisher also received a contract in May for 66 miles of secondary barrier from Coronado National Memorial to the New Mexico state line. SLSCO Ltd. received a contract on June 26 for another 62 miles of border wall across the Tohono O’odham Nation.
4. The Arizona Department of Transportation will permanently close the I-10 interchange at Palo Verde Road Aug. 14 as work progresses on its $600M widening project in Tucson. The approximately three-mile project between Kino Pkwy. and Alvernon Way includes widening I-10 to three lanes in each direction and constructing a new interchange at Country Club Road, where much of the roadway and ramp paving is complete. The new interchange is expected to open this fall, and overall construction will continue through 2028.
5. The new office building for Redpoint Contracting is moving toward an April 2027 completion as the tilt panels have recently been stood up. Designed by a team of Grant L. Olds Architects and Helmut John Hammen and built by Muir Contracting, the 37.5KSF industrial building will include 15KSF of office space and is located near Pecos and Power roads in Gilbert.
Completions
6. A 64KSF Safeway has opened at The Gilmore, Thompson Thrift’s 35-acre mixed-use development at Val Vista Drive and Germann Road in Gilbert. Construction is ongoing on The Residences at The Gilmore, a 300-unit luxury apartment community expected to welcome its first residents in early 2027. The overall development will include approximately 200KSF of grocery, restaurant and retail space and a hotel.
7. Construction is complete on Emblem Mesa, a 248-unit multifamily community at 1340 S. 48th St. in Mesa. Garrett Companies developed the 14.3-acre project, which includes 13 two- and three-story residential buildings with detached garages, covered parking and shared amenities. Ware Malcomb provided architectural design services.
8. Leasing is underway at Silo Morrison Ranch following the opening of the 231-unit multifamily community in Gilbert. Leon Capital Group developed the project, and its LMF Construction subsidiary handled construction.
9. The Wayne, a 100-unit Build-to-Rent townhome community at 1535 N. Dobson Road in Chandler, has opened to residents following a 20-month build. Porter Kyle developed the project, with Porter Kyle Builders serving as general contractor. The clubhouse and first four buildings have been turned over to Mark-Taylor for lease-up and property management. The community offers one-, two- and three-bedroom townhomes with two-car garages and private backyards.
10. The 233 Suites, a 76-room boutique hotel at 233 E. Main St. in downtown Mesa, has opened under the Unscripted by Hyatt brand. Soltrust and Hospitality Capital Partners co-manage the redevelopment, which transformed a planned apartment project into a hotel with 13KSF of Class A office space. The mixed-use project also includes new dining options.
11. A 13-mile pavement rehabilitation project along U.S. 93 south of Wikieup wrapped up in July. The Arizona Department of Transportation repaved the roadway and shoulders between mileposts 131 and 144 and completed additional roadway, drainage and safety improvements. Work on the project began in spring 2025.
12. An $8M, 16-mile pavement improvement project on I-40 between Seligman and Kingman is complete. The Arizona Department of Transportation milled and resurfaced westbound I-40 from Fort Rock Road to the Markham Wash Bridge, made spot repairs and added new pavement markings. Work started in January and resumed in April following a brief break.
13. Two Arizona Department of Transportation projects adding passing lanes along U.S. 70 between Peridot and Bylas are complete. The projects added eastbound and westbound passing lanes at separate locations within the San Carlos Apache Tribe community, along with drainage, roadway and safety improvements. Work on the westbound project began in July 2025 and finished in June, while the eastbound project ran from November 2025 through August.
14. All Copy Products and Verticomm recently completed construction on their new 39KSF office and warehouse facility in Chandler. The building includes a two-story office with a demo room, a mezzanine and a significantly larger warehouse footprint than their previous location.
15. Cholla High School in Tucson opened a new artificial turf football field funded by the voter-approved TUSD Bond 2023.
