    Awards & Accolades

    1. SRP launched its Business Rebates program in 2009 and the City of Mesa is the first municipality ever to earn the maximum of $300K annually in energy-efficient rebate incentives. The City of Mesa projects that combined to earn the distinction were:

    • Greenfield Water Reclamation Plant Variable Frequency Drives;
    • Falcon Field Airport LED Lighting Upgrade;
    • AZ Labs Central Plant;
    • Brown Road Water Treatment Plant (BRWTP) LED Retrofit – Phase 2, and
    • AZ Research Labs – Preliminary Assessment.

    Groundbreakings

    2. The City of Avondale held a groundbreaking ceremony earlier this month to launch construction on the new Avondale Aquatic Center on the Avondale Civic Center campus. The $30M project is expected to deliver in summer 2023.

    Progress Reports

    3. Work continues to advance on the reformation of the 13.29-acre Papago Plaza at Scottsdale and McDowell roads. The project features a five-story, 276-unit Alliance Residential apartment complex – SEVENTYONE15 McDowell – currently leasing along with a 22KSF hotel currently under construction, a 23.5KSF grocery store, and three buildings totaling 25KSF with restaurants and retail. Restaurant and retail tenants are expected to move in Q2 of 2023.

    4. The Arizona State University/Catellus master plan for the Novus Innovation Corridor in Tempe continues to make progress. A new office building and parking garage is going up on the site of the former Karsten Golf Course, and a new “micro-unit” apartment development is starting construction. Another apartment complex is planned east of Rural Road, as is another office tower. Novus is expected to take 15-20 years to reach full build-out.

    5. While the $115M ASU New Multi-Purpose Hockey Arena is expected to wrap up construction in October, the $20M worth of additional National Hockey League-mandated changes and expansions needed to enable the Phoenix Coyotes to play their home games there will not be completed before the start of the NHL season. The team and facility managers are working on exceptions to let the team play at least some of its early season home games in the new space.

    Completions

    6. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport showcased the opening of its new eighth concourse last week. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, members of the Phoenix City Council, other local leaders and Southwest Airlines officials arrived at the new concourse on the airline’s Arizona One flagship aircraft where they held a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The concourse will provide Southwest eight additional gates.

    7. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held June 22nd to open the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ new 275KSF clinic at 400 N. 32nd Street in Phoenix. The new facility, built by Jacobsen Construction, is one of the largest of its type ever constructed for the VA and includes state-of-the-art outpatient spaces for primary care, mental health treatment, radiology services, OB-GYN care, pharmacy services and others.

    8. Goodyear officials will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony August 1st to mark the grand opening of Goodyear Civic Square. A tour of the new City Hall facility will follow. Ryan Companies provided construction and some of the architecture and engineering services for the project, and company officials will also be on hand at the ceremony.

    9. The Arizona Department of Transportation has completed pavement improvements along Milton Road, also known as SR 89A, in Flagstaff. Crews milled down the worn pavement and laid new pavement down. They also made sidewalk repairs and improved curb ramps along Milton from Forest Meadows Street to Phoenix Avenue.

    10. Anchor Health Properties announced the opening of a new 12KSF hybrid standalone emergency department and urgent care center in Surprise’s Prasada District. The project was the result of a collaboration between Anchor Health, HonorHealth, Intuitive Health, Devenney Group Architects and JE Dunn Construction.
