On top of its previously pledged investment of $165B in expanding its Arizona operations, officials with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company announced this week the company will invest another $100B.
The announcement was made during TSMC’s earnings call.
The Trump administration has put increasing pressure on foreign semiconductor manufacturers to increase their production within the United States. TSMC has expanded significantly in north Phoenix since breaking ground on its first fab in the area in 2021.
Under the new $100B pledge, TSMC plans to build four new fabs. It has already built or is in various stages of development for six semiconductor manufacturing facilities, two facilities for advanced chip packaging and one research and development center in the state.
It has been speculated the four new facilities will be built on a more than 900-acre campus expansion space TSMC purchased adjacent to its main campus.
Company officials said the pace of development would depend on market conditions, adding a plan is in place but the schedule is not finalized.
TSMC’s overall revenues in Q2 grew to roughly $40.2B, a 36% year-over-year increase. Profits were up almost 80% and reached slightly more than $22B. Capital spending this year is targeted at up to $64B. (Source: New York Times)
