Arizonaโs seasonally adjusted unemployment rateย decreasedย toย 7.5ย percentย inย Decemberย 2020,ย fromย Novemberย 2020, according to the latestย reportย published by theย Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity.ย ย
The national rateย remained atย 6.7ย percent fromย November. Inย Decemberย 2019, the state had a seasonally adjusted rate ofย 4.5ย percent, and the national was atย 3.5ย percent.ย
The state had a netย gainย ofย 6,300ย non-farmย jobs over the month. โHistorically (2010-2019), Nonfarm employment has averagedย aย gainย ofย 5,500ย jobs inย December,โ theย report states.ย Trade, Transportation & Utilitiesย hadย theย largestย netย gainย withย 9,800ย jobs, followed byย Education & Health Servicesย with aย gainย ofย 4,000.ย Constructionย had the largest net loss of 5,100 jobs for the month.ย ย
Trade, Transportation & Utilitiesย took the top spot in job gains fromย Decemberย 2019 toย Decemberย 2020 with a total ofย 22,700, whileย Leisure & Hospitalityย took the top spot in job losses over the yearย withย 44,800.ย Construction reported aย 3,300-jobย gainย over the year.ย
The Construction sector features three major segments: Buildings, Heavy, and Specialty Trades. There are currentlyย 36,000ย jobs in Buildings,ย whichย decreasedย byย 2,300ย fromย Novemberย 2020ย andย decreasedย againย byย 2,300ย fromย Decemberย 2019. Heavy Constructionย lostย 100ย over the month for a total ofย 20,700ย andย isย downย 500ย fromย Decemberย 2019. Specialty Tradesย lostย 3,000ย for the month atย 116,500, and the segmentย lost 500ย over the year.ย
Construction jobs in the Phoenix Metro Area (Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale)ย lost 4,300ย over the monthย for a total of 134,700.ย Theย Decemberย 2019ย number wasย 135,700.ย ย
The Metro Tucson construction jobsย remained at 18,700ย fromย Novemberย 2020ย andย gainedย 400ย fromย Decemberย 2019.ย
Yuma, Flagstaff, Prescott, Lake Havasu City-Kingman and Sierra Vista-Douglas combine Construction and Natural Resources jobs in reporting their job sector totals.ย Yuma, Flagstaff, Prescottย andย Sierra Vista-Douglasย eachย remained at 2,500, 2,400, 6,700ย and 2,100 jobs respectively for the month.ย Lake Havasu City-Kingmanย gained 100 for a total of 3,800 for the month.ย
