Arizonaโs seasonally adjusted unemployment rateย increasedย toย 6.7ย percentย inย Septemberย 2020,ย fromย Augustย 2020, according to the latestย reportย published by theย Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity.ย ย
The national rateย decreasedย toย 7.9ย percent fromย 8.4ย percent inย August. Inย Septemberย 2019, the state had a seasonally adjusted rate ofย 4.6ย percent, and the national was atย 3.5ย percent.ย
The state had a netย gainย ofย 30,200ย non-farmย jobs over the month. โHistorically (2010-2019), Nonfarm employment has averagedย aย gainย ofย 28,700ย jobs inย August,โ theย report states.ย Governmentย hadย theย largestย netย gainย withย 10,800ย jobs, followed byย Leisure & Hospitalityย with aย gainย ofย 7,000.ย Constructionย reported no gains or losses for the month.ย ย
Trade, Transportation & Utilitiesย took the top spot in job gains fromย Septemberย 2019 toย Septemberย 2020 with a total ofย 14,900, whileย Leisure & Hospitalityย took the top spot in job losses over the yearย withย 56,000.ย Construction reported aย 3,300ย jobย loss over the year.ย
The Construction sector features three major segments: Buildings, Heavy, and Specialty Trades. There are currentlyย 34,700ย jobs in Buildings,ย whichย decreasedย byย 700ย fromย Augustย 2020ย andย decreasedย byย 900ย fromย Septemberย 2019. Heavy Constructionย lostย 600ย over the month for a total ofย 29,500ย andย isย also downย 1,100ย fromย Septemberย 2019. Specialty Tradesย gainedย 1,300ย for the month atย 115,700, and the segmentย lostย 1,300ย over the year.ย
Construction jobs in the Phoenix Metro Area (Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale)ย gainedย 800ย over the monthย for a total of 133,500.ย Theย Septemberย 2019ย number wasย 136,400.ย ย
The Metro Tucson construction jobsย lostย 300ย fromย Augustย for a total of 18,000ย andย remained the sameย fromย Septemberย 2019.ย
Yuma, Flagstaff, Prescott, Lake Havasu City-Kingmanย and Sierra Vista-Douglas combine Construction and Natural Resources jobs in reporting their job sector totals.ย Yuma, Flagstaff andย Lake Havasu City-Kingmanย remained the same over the month with a total of 2,400, 2,300 and 3,600ย jobsย respectively. Prescott lost 100 for a total of 6,600 jobs for the month.ย Sierra Vista-Douglasย gained 100 over the month for a total of 2,100 jobs.
