Arizonaโs seasonally adjusted unemployment rateย increasedย toย 5.5ย percentย inย Marchย 2020,ย fromย Februaryย 2020, according to the latestย reportย published by theย Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity.ย ย
The national rateย increased toย 4.4ย percent fromย 3.5ย percent inย February. Inย Marchย 2019, the state had a seasonally adjusted rate ofย 4.8ย percent, and the national was atย 3.8ย percent.ย
The state had a net loss of 7,400 non-farmย jobs over the month. โHistorically (2010-2019), Nonfarm employment has averagedย a gain of 10,900 jobs in March,โ theย report states. Trade, Transportation &ย Utilities had the largest net gain of jobsย with 2,800, followed by Education andย Health Services with 1,700. Of the 11ย sectors tracked, Manufacturing hadย the smallest net gain with 100 jobs.ย Construction lost 600 jobs over theย month and Leisure & Hospitality hadย the largest net loss at 5,200.ย
Education and Health Services in Arizona took the top spot in job gains from March 2019 to March 2020 with a total of 23,700, while Trade, Transportation & Utilities came in second with 14,900. Construction came in third with 6,800.ย
The Construction sector features three major segments: Buildings, Heavy, and Specialty Trades. There are currentlyย 37,100ย jobs in Buildings,ย whichย increased byย 100ย fromย Februaryย 2020ย andย increasedย 3,400ย fromย Marchย 2019. Heavy Constructionย gainedย 200ย over the month for a total ofย 21,200 andย isย upย 1,300ย fromย Marchย 2019. Specialty Tradesย decreasedย 900ย for the month atย 115,500, and the segment addedย 2,100ย over the year.ย
Construction jobs in the Phoenix Metro Area (Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale)ย decreasedย 1,200ย over the monthย for a total of 136,400.ย Theย Marchย 2019ย number wasย 131,500.ย ย
The Metro Tucson construction jobsย lostย 100ย fromย Februaryย for a total of 17,900ย and increased byย 400ย fromย Marchย 2019.ย
Yuma, Flagstaff, Prescott, Lake Havasu City-Kingman and Sierra Vista-Douglas combine Construction and Natural Resources jobs in reporting their job sector totals.ย Yuma, Prescott,ย Lake Havasu City-Kingmanย andย Sierra Vista-Douglasย remained at 3,100, 6,200, 3,400 and 1,900 respectively for the month.ย Flagstaffย gainedย 100 for a totalย ofย 2,400 for the month.ย
