Arizonaโs seasonally adjusted unemployment rateย increasedย toย 10.6ย percentย inย Julyย 2020,ย fromย Juneย 2020, according to the latestย reportย published by theย Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity.ย ย
The national rateย decreasedย toย 10.2ย percent fromย 11.1ย percent inย June. Inย Julyย 2019, the state had a seasonally adjusted rate ofย 4.7ย percent, and the national was atย 3.7ย percent.ย
The state had a netย lossย ofย 19,500ย non-farmย jobs over the month. โHistorically (2010-2019), Nonfarm employment has averagedย aย lossย ofย 19,200ย jobs inย July,โ theย report states.ย Leisure & Hospitalityย hadย theย largestย netย lossย withย 16,200ย jobs, followed byย Governmentย with aย lossย ofย 1,500.ย Constructionย lostย 1,200ย jobs over theย month.ย Trade, Transportation & Utilitiesย had the largest net gains with 700 jobs.ย
Trade, Transportation & Utilitiesย took the top spot in job gains fromย Julyย 2019 toย Julyย 2020 with a total ofย 6,500, whileย Leisure & Hospitalityย took the top spot in job losses over the yearย withย 60,600.ย
The Construction sector features three major segments: Buildings, Heavy, and Specialty Trades. There are currentlyย 34,500ย jobs in Buildings,ย whichย increasedย byย 200ย fromย Juneย 2020ย andย decreasedย byย 1,200ย fromย Julyย 2019. Heavy Constructionย lostย 400ย over the month for a total ofย 20,600ย andย isย upย 300ย fromย Julyย 2019. Specialty Tradesย lostย 1,000ย for the month atย 113,300, and the segmentย lostย 3,700ย over the year.ย
Construction jobs in the Phoenix Metro Area (Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale)ย decreasedย 1,200ย over the monthย for a total of 132,200.ย Theย Julyย 2019ย number wasย 136,200.ย ย
The Metro Tucson construction jobsย lostย 400ย fromย Juneย for a total of 18,100ย andย remained the sameย fromย Julyย 2019.ย
Yuma, Flagstaff, Prescott, Lake Havasu City-Kingmanย and Sierra Vista-Douglas combine Construction and Natural Resources jobs in reporting their job sector totals.ย Flagstaffย lost 100 over the month for a total of 2,200.ย Yuma,ย Prescott,ย Lake Havasu City-Kingmanย and Sierra Vista-Douglasย remained at 2,400,ย 6,500,ย 3,500 and 1,900 respectively for the month.ย
