Arizonaโs seasonally adjusted unemployment rateย decreasedย toย 8.9ย percentย inย Mayย 2020,ย fromย Aprilย 2020, according to the latestย reportย published by theย Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity.ย ย
The national rateย decreasedย toย 13.3ย percent fromย 14.7ย percent inย April. Inย Mayย 2019, the state had a seasonally adjusted rate ofย 4.8ย percent, and the national was atย 3.6ย percent.ย
The state had a netย gainย ofย 45,200ย non-farmย jobs over the month. โHistorically (2010-2019), Nonfarm employment has averagedย aย lossย ofย 6,800ย jobs inย May,โ theย report states.ย Leisure & Hospitalityย hadย theย largestย netย gainย withย 37,200ย jobs, followed by Trade, Transportation & Utilities with aย gainย ofย 9,000.ย Constructionย gained 3,500ย jobs over theย month.ย
Constructionย took the top spot in job gains fromย Mayย 2019 toย Mayย 2020 with a total ofย 1,500, whileย Leisure & Hospitalityย took the top spot in job losses over the yearย withย 87,000.ย
The Construction sector features three major segments: Buildings, Heavy, and Specialty Trades. There are currentlyย 35,000ย jobs in Buildings,ย whichย increasedย byย 600ย fromย Aprilย 2020ย andย increasedย 400ย fromย Mayย 2019. Heavy Constructionย gainedย 500ย over the month for a total ofย 21,500ย andย isย upย 1,500ย fromย Mayย 2019. Specialty Tradesย increasedย 2,400ย for the month atย 115,200, and the segmentย lostย 400ย over the year.ย
Construction jobs in the Phoenix Metro Area (Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale)ย increasedย 200ย over the monthย for a total of 134,200.ย Theย Mayย 2019ย number wasย 133,800.ย ย
The Metro Tucson construction jobsย gainedย 1,800ย fromย Aprilย for a total of 18,700ย and increased byย 800ย fromย Mayย 2019.ย
Yuma, Flagstaff, Prescott, Lake Havasu City-Kingmanย and Sierra Vista-Douglas combine Construction and Natural Resources jobs in reporting their job sector totals.ย Yuma and Lake Havasu City-Kingman each gained 300 for the month for a total of 3,000 andย 3,400ย respectively. Flagstaff and Sierra Vista-Douglas each gained 200 for the month for a total of 2,300 andย 1,900ย respectively. Prescott gained 100 jobs for the month for a total of 6,300.ย
