Arizonaโs seasonally adjusted unemployment rateย decreasedย toย 5.9ย percentย inย Augustย 2020,ย fromย Julyย 2020, according to the latestย reportย published by theย Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity.ย ย
The national rateย decreasedย toย 8.4ย percent fromย 10.2ย percent inย July. Inย Augustย 2019, the state had a seasonally adjusted rate ofย 4.6ย percent, and the national was atย 3.7ย percent.ย
The state had a netย gainย ofย 79,200ย non-farmย jobs over the month. โHistorically (2010-2019), Nonfarm employment has averagedย aย gainย ofย 53,900ย jobs inย August,โ theย report states.ย Governmentย hadย theย largestย netย gainย withย 48,800ย jobs, followed byย Education & Health Servicesย with aย gainย ofย 11,400.ย Constructionย gained 1,300ย jobs over theย month.ย ย
Trade, Transportation & Utilitiesย took the top spot in job gains fromย Augustย 2019 toย Augustย 2020 with a total ofย 11,600, whileย Leisure & Hospitalityย took the top spot in job losses over the yearย withย 63,500.ย
The Construction sector features three major segments: Buildings, Heavy, and Specialty Trades. There are currentlyย 35,300ย jobs in Buildings,ย whichย increasedย byย 900ย fromย Julyย 2020ย andย decreasedย byย 400ย fromย Augustย 2019. Heavy Constructionย lostย 400ย over the month for a total ofย 20,100ย andย isย also downย 400ย fromย Augustย 2019. Specialty Tradesย gainedย 800ย for the month atย 113,900, and the segmentย lostย 3,000ย over the year.ย
Construction jobs in the Phoenix Metro Area (Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale)ย increasedย 200ย over the monthย for a total of 132,200.ย Theย Augustย 2019ย number wasย 136,300.ย ย
The Metro Tucson construction jobsย gained 100ย fromย Julyย for a total of 18,300ย andย gained 400ย fromย Augustย 2019.ย
Yuma, Flagstaff, Prescott, Lake Havasu City-Kingman and Sierra Vista-Douglas combine Construction and Natural Resources jobs in reporting their job sector totals.ย Yuma andย Sierra Vista-Douglasย remained the same over the month withย 2,300 and 2,000 job respectively. Flagstaff andย Lake Havasu City-Kingmanย gained 100 for the month with 2,300 and 3,600 jobs respectively. Prescott gained 200 over the month for a total of 6,700.ย
