    A series of requests recommended for approval last month by the Casa Grande Planning and Zoning Commission could pave the way for another expansion of Lucid Motors’ manufacturing facility in the city.

    According to the Commission’s agenda information, the company is requesting rezoning of nearly 1,200 acres across four parcels from Urban Ranch to General Industrial:

    1. +/-1,065.5 acres, generally located at the west and east side of Thornton Rd south of Selma Highway;
    2. +/- 40 acres, generally located at the northeast corner of Selma Highway and Burris Road;
    3. +/- 55 acres, generally located approximately 920 feet north of Selma Highway and 0.5 miles east of Thornton Road, and
    4. +/-37.4 acres, generally located .5 miles north of Selma Highway, along Thornton Road.

    The discussion points state: “There are three separate requests associated with this item. The first request is to change the Phase 2 Growth Area to the Phase 1 Growth Area, as described in the General Plan.

    “The second request is for a zone change and is in conjunction with a proposed annexation. This request is from Urban Ranch (UR) to General Industrial (I-2) for +/-1,198 acres generally located along both the east and west sides of Thornton Road south of Selma Highway and north of Interstate 8. The site is requested to be rezoned to accommodate the next future phases of Lucid.

    “The third request is a zone change and is also in conjunction with a proposed annexation. This request is from Urban Ranch (UR) to Community Services (B-4) for +/-110 acres, generally located near the northeast corner of Interstate 8 (I-8) and Thornton Road.”

    The submitted documents show Lucid already leases the land for the expansion, which is named Project Saguaro. The expansion would take place over several decades. Lucid had finalized purchase agreements for 1,400 acres of land with Casa Grande and Pinal County in summer 2022. (AZBEX; Aug. 19, 2022)

    The Arizona Republic reported there are no final plans in place, but the changes will allow the company to move forward as growth becomes necessary.

    Following a January 2024 expansion, Lucid’s Casa Grande facility currently occupies 3.85MSF.
