    Groundbreakings

    1. The Arizona Department of Transportation began work on June 15 on the Loop 303 Extension, a $613M project in Goodyear that will extend the freeway approximately four miles south from Van Buren Street to Maricopa County 85. Initial corridor clearing began June 15, with construction of a new northbound frontage road scheduled to start this fall. The project is expected to take approximately four years to complete.

    2. The Town of Queen Creek has broken ground on the Queen Creek Police Department Headquarters, a $96M facility off Ellsworth Road north of Crewse Lane in Queen Creek. The new headquarters will replace the department’s current operations at the Law Enforcement and Community Chambers building, consolidating police operations into a single facility. Construction is expected to be completed in 2028.

    3. Maricopa County is expanding its animal shelter network with the groundbreaking of the West Valley Animal Care & Control Center in Glendale. The 94KSF facility is designed to increase capacity and support shelter operations and services. Kitchell is serving as the general contractor, and Multistudio and Animal Arts Design Studios designed the project. Plans call for more than 600 kennels and a campus that integrates indoor and covered outdoor animal care spaces.

    4. Comité de Bien Estar has broken ground on Somerton Townhomes. The 29-unit townhome development will be on 3.4 acres at the SWC of César Chávez Avenue and County 15th Street in Somerton. The project will offer three-bedroom, two-bathroom homes designed for both government-backed loan programs and open-market buyers. Construction is expected to take approximately 10 months, with total investment in infrastructure and housing approaching $10M.

    5. Slurry seal treatments and pavement repairs are underway in Sedona as part of the Asphalt Pavement Preservation Project. Cactus Asphalt is completing the work across the Roadrunner Rancho, Harmony Heights, Harmony Knolls, Rim Shadows, Shadow Rock, Doodlebug No. 2, Orchards and Indian Trails areas. The project began on June 8 and is expected to continue through the end of June, extending pavement life and improving driving conditions.

    6. The City of Peoria recently advanced work on the 91st Avenue Pavement Improvement Project between Happy Valley Road and Villa Lindo Drive. The project involved milling and replacing the roadway’s asphalt surface while preserving the existing subgrade, which evaluations determined remained in good condition. Construction began on June 3 and was scheduled to conclude June 16.

    Progress Reports

    7. Casino Del Sol Vahi Taa’am is scheduled to open Nov. 15 on Grant Road at I-10 in Tucson. The Pascua Yaqui Tribe project will feature a 52.3KSF gaming floor with 924 slot machines, table games and a sportsbook. The property will also include two restaurants and three bars and will serve as the Tribe’s third gaming property in southern Arizona.

    8. Phase 1 of East Mesa Community Park is expected to open in the fall at Avenue 6E and 36th Street in Yuma. The approximately 22-acre project has been under construction since January 2025 and includes a community lake, trails, recreation areas, gathering spaces and supporting infrastructure. Major infrastructure improvements have largely been completed, with crews finishing site work, landscaping, public art installations and final inspections. Future phases will add additional recreational amenities and support facilities.

    9. Construction is underway on the Citrus Garden Pavement Rehabilitation Project in Peoria, where street crews and partner contractors are reconstructing roadways within the neighborhood bounded by 83rd Avenue and 87th Avenue and Williams Road and Via Montoya Drive. The phased, street-by-street project began May 11 and is scheduled for completion June 30. City officials said pavement evaluations determined the roads required full reconstruction, rather than preservation measures.

    Completions

    10. A nearly $100M transformation of Glendale’s civic core is nearing completion with the unveiling of the Downtown Campus Reinvestment Project. The initiative modernized the city hall and council chambers, reimagined the E. Lowell Rogers Amphitheater and preserved Murphy Park as the centerpiece of the downtown campus. The city plans to showcase the project during the week of June 15.

    11. Estia at Zanjero Trails is now open at 12020 N. Perryville Road in Surprise. Owned and developed by Zilber Residential Group and managed by Mark-Taylor Residential, the Build-to-Rent community features detached one- and two-bedroom rental homes with access to amenities including a clubhouse, fitness center, resort-style pool and spa, and outdoor recreation spaces. The project is located near Loop 303 and the Phoenix-Wickenburg Highway in the West Valley.

    12. A new Build-to-Rent neighborhood has opened in Surprise with the debut of Avilla Foothills, a 108-home community developed by NexMetro Communities. The project occupies 9.3 acres at 12350 N. Cotton Lane and offers mostly detached, single-level rental homes in one-, two- and three-bedroom configurations. The community is located near Loop 303 and expands housing options in the rapidly growing Northwest Valley.

    13. Seafood City Supermarket is scheduled to open in mid-July at Chandler Fashion Center, marking the Filipino grocery chain’s first Arizona location. The 65KSF store will occupy the former Sears space at 3111 W. Chandler Blvd. in Chandler and will include a food hall featuring seven dining concepts. It will serve as a new anchor tenant at the shopping center.

    14. A former commercial space in Phoenix’s Arcadia neighborhood has been redeveloped into MEND Wellness, a 7KSF integrative wellness center. WDS Integrated Design Build delivered the project through a design-build approach that resolved budget, constructability and infrastructure issues identified during preconstruction. The completed facility now houses a mix of medical, wellness and holistic health providers.

    15. Salt River Project and Aypa Power announced the Pediment Battery Energy Storage System is now operational in Mesa’s Elliot Road Technology Corridor. The 250MW/1,000MWh facility can supply enough electricity to power up to 56,250 homes for four hours and will help meet growing residential and commercial energy demand across the Valley. The project is the first of two battery storage facilities Aypa is developing under contract with SRP, with a second 250MW/2,000MWh system expected to come online in 2028.
