The Aztec-themed Fry’s Electronics store at Thunderbird Road and Interstate 17 will make way for the new home of the Phoenix Police Department’s Cactus Park Precinct and a new fire station.
The City of Phoenix has not disclosed how much it is paying for the 12.5-acre property, but the Maricopa County Assessor’s Office lists the full cash value at $20.8M and a limited property value of $16.5M.
The purchase is made possible, at least in part, by voter approval of a $500M bond package last November, which included $214M for police, fire, streets and pedestrian infrastructure.
Officials say the existing Cactus Precinct location at 39th Avenue and Cactus Road has long been inadequate and is severely outdated to meet current needs.
Plans for the site will use 8.5 acres for the new Cactus Park Police Precinct and four acres for the new fire station. A 2023 recommendation suggested demolishing the current precinct building on 39th Avenue and replacing it with a fire station, but that station was not made part of the bond funding.
While two existing fire stations are within two miles of the newly planned location, officials say the new station will add resources and personnel to better serve the area. (Source)
