The addition of an $80M-plus indoor football stadium to the planned new high school facility continues to draw commentary about the Tolleson Union High School District.
Superintendent Jeremy Calles says the addition could be approved in two-to-three months.
No other metro Phoenix school has an indoor stadium, and opponents say the plan could create expensive future maintenance costs.
Calles estimates the entire cost for Tolleson High School #8, including the stadium, will be between $220M and $400M. Renderings for the facility are expected before the TUHSD Board’s next meeting on Nov. 18.
Two of the three Board members who have previously supported the project face possible recall elections, but those will not happen before the final votes on the plan in the next few months.
Voters rejected a $125M bond request from the District in this month’s election. Funding for the new school, however, will come from a 2023 bond election, money saved from previous bonds and $130M from the School Facilities Board. (Source)
