What ifย much ofย your job descriptionย centered aroundย your ability to connect people and opportunities? And what if one day inย mid-March you were told that youย canโtย do that in person anymore,ย only through video, calls, emails and messaging.ย In fact, youย canโtย really leave your home or comeย closer thanย sixย feetย toย another person.ย ย
Goneย are the business lunches, getting–to–know–you coffees, networking events and strategic face–to–face meetings. โIf anyoneโs world has changed itโs the business development profession, but at the same time we have always been the most flexible,โ said Brookeย (Vink)ย Taff, Business Development Managerย forย Wood Patel.ย
Having to constantly think on their feet, work from anywhere and always be ready for that next meetingย was already part of the deal for mostย industryย professionals.ย So,ย I checked in with someย of themย toย see how they are adaptingย to these new constraints.ย
First off, everyone isย really busy. The lack of commute and travel between meetings has given everyone the ability to get more work done.ย They are experiencing less interruptions andย canย concentrate more instead of running from one meeting to the next.ย ย
The Marketย ย
Most companies thatย Iย spokeย to haveย seen only a small number of projectsย that were already moving forwardย get put on hold.ย Recently awardedย projectsย in industries most affected byย COVID-19ย have seen someย delaysย orย have gone onย indefinite hold.ย Timelines have started shiftingย due toย a limitedย number of people on construction sites and other precautions.ย ย ย
Thereย isย a spike in projects that are directly in support of tackling COVID-19,ย like the work for theย US Army Corp of Engineersย as well as with companies that have received money through theย CARES Act, specifically in theย National Defenseย supply chain. Keeping track of those industriesย isย key for companies looking at future opportunities.ย ย
Because municipalitiesย areย projectingย dramaticย reductions in revenueย due toย reducedย sales tax generation, someย capital construction projects areย not moving forward.ย Despite not having immediate projects, Chad Schleicher, Business Development Associateย forย SmithGroupย expressed that โmunicipal clients are open to talkingย about future planning.โย ย
Private developmentย is in aย holding pattern but there are some developers that are still going through with planning and entitlement work.ย The hospitality industry, one of the hardestย hitย sectorsย by the pandemicย so far,ย hasย seen many projects in planningย be putย on hold indefinitely.ย ย
Keeping in Touchย ย
Everyone has seen the screen shot from theย ZOOMย meeting on someoneโsย LinkedInย or posted one themselves. This format is the new normal and business development professionals are using it to their advantage. It is key to everyoneย Iย talked to that they connect with clients through calls or videoย on a regular basis. We heard repeatedly that clients are open to talking and itย isย easy to make those connections.ย ย
A savvy business development professional knows every client is different. It is important to differentiate your method of communication and use opportunities as a platform to share good data, trends and solutions. Chuck Reynolds fromย Terraconย is using webinars to demonstrate their proprietary Stage 1 Service to help clients keep projects moving forward. Reynolds explains the service, โunlocks historical data, GIS Maps and experienced local knowledge to continue planning and preliminary design when site access is limited.โย
Tools that Allow Connection from Afarย
Topย business developmentย professionalsย utilize technologyย to work more efficiently and continue moving businesses forward from video interviewsย andย conferencing,ย to collaboration software likeย Microsoft Teams. โForced protocol is making people use systems that they had not used before,โ statedย Schleicher.ย When people are required to collaborate remotely, what previously was a hindrance now is essential for success.ย
Video interviews are becoming the new normal. The choreography of the interview, including backgrounds, who talks when and howย toย present material isย paramount.ย Company–wide task forces are developing best practices, sharing lessons learned and looking for the most creative approach to beat the competition.
Creativeย Business Development Practicesย ย
Whatย are theย creative waysย in whichย professionalsย areย connecting with clients or partners?ย The most common ways to connect with leads groups are virtual happy hours.ย ย
Allowing people to get to know one another on a deeper level, see their home, meet their kids orย petsย and take a look inside what life is like for them. Others are sending gift cards for a virtualย lunch throughย food delivery companies or buying dinner for someoneโs entire family through local businesses.ย ย
One of the trade associations has allowed its members to take over their Instagramย feed for a day to post stories from their company.ย Some firms areย evenย doing virtual tours of projects or properties.ย Taffย describedย the way a contractor,ย โpulled together resources to donateย hand sanitizer and masks for their healthcare clientsโฆย now that is meaningful.โย
While this is a new frontier for many, theย keyย takeaway from all the business development professionalsย I interviewedย is that now is a great time to unify the message ofย yourย team toย clients. Make sure to connect more personally asย everyone is dealing with a new normal. Be a resource to help them during this time. Many companies are doing extraordinary things to help with the situation,ย i.e.ย visiting local businesses, makingย masksย or donating to the foodbank. Spread the wordย about these things via social media.ย During this time,ย continue to add value toย people and companies. It isย vitalย for firms to keep theirย existing clientsย andย reassure yourย clientsย that you are there toย assistย in all capacities.ย
The business development world isย acclimatingย to theirย current situation.ย Ultimately,ย the time thatย is gainedย not going from place to placeย allowsย peopleย more time toย processย and prep, producing better work.ย ย
