Cooperation breeds success, and in this case, accolades as well.
Sundt/Rummel, A Joint Venture, has earned The Associated General Contractors of America’s “2018 AGC Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award” for its work on the White Tanks Flood Retarding Structure No. 4 rehabilitation project for the Arizona Department of Water Resources.
The project, in Buckeye, “consisted of preconstruction and construction phase services to complete the rehabilitation of the existing FRS,” according to the award submission.
ADWR had named White Tanks as having the highest risk in Arizona for lack of performance during peak flood periods. To ensure maximum flood level protection the dam needed to be raised two feet.
According the submission, “Improvements to the existing 6,000-linear-foot earth dam included (more than) one million cubic yards of excavation, installing 19,000-cubic-yards of sand filter utilizing an upstream slope design, raising the existing embankment vertically to satisfy the probable maximum flood elevation, 1,600-linear-feet of new earth dam extensions, reconstructing the principal outlet, constructing two new concrete drop structures, a new auxiliary spillway, 1,615-linear-feet of concrete channel, flood pool grading, rock mulch, tall pot trees, native seeding, and aesthetic treatments on all of the concrete structures.”
White Tanks was one of the flood control district’s first CM@R-delivered projects. SRJV took the inherent hesitancy and concern involved in major process changes into account and worked with the client to ensure effective communication and collaboration across the entire design and construction timelines.
Criteria for the award, according to the AGC website, are as follows:
- Signing a formal partnering charter
- Achieving a common goal
- Honoring all stake holders
- Resolving conflict
- Improving communication on the project with all audiences
- Incorporating team-building activities
In accepting the award on the team’s behalf, Sundt Senior Vice President and Transportation Group Manager Jeff Williamson said, “The Flood Control District of Maricopa County trusted Sundt/Rummel, A Joint Venture to complete this project using the Construction Manager At Risk delivery method, a new approach for them, and the project team’s commitment to planning, safety, quality and partnering resulted in a highly successful project. The JV team embraced partnering as a way to present value-engineering ideas and solve project challenges.”
