The YMCA plans to demolish the Lincoln Family Downtown YMCA fitness facility and low-income housing community in downtown Phoenix.
The group filed a demolition application with the Phoenix Historic Preservation Office this month for the property near Taylor Street and 1st Avenue.
Phoenix guidelines place a 60-day hold on demolition applications for properties eligible for a historic designation or those listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The YMCA facility was built in 1951. It is set to close Sept. 30. The demolition pause is set to expire Nov. 20.
Associate VP of Marketing and Communications for Valley of the Sun YMCA Ryan Knack said in early September YMCA retains ownership and has no plans to sell the property. He said future plans for the site will be announced when more details are in place.
YMCA said the building was closing because it has reached the end of its useful life and the housing program is no longer sustainable.
The organization has been working to transition residents into other housing options, but many residents have yet to be placed. (Source: The Arizona Republic)
