The Somerton City Council has approved a development agreement with Somerton Hospitality that could lead to the construction of the city’s first hotel.
The proposed facility will be on Main Street in the Parkview Commerce Center.
According to local news sources and the City Council documents, Somerton Hospitality will pay the City $600K for the property. The transaction must be finalized within a year, after which the developer will have up to two years to have the project’s construction in a “significantly advanced” state.
Plans for the actual hotel are still fluid, with an expected room count between 90 and 130 rooms and a height of either three or four stories. Documents submitted as part of the development agreement’s background materials specifically reference an intent to build a WoodSpring Suites extended stay hotel and refer to the project as “WoodSpring Suites Somerton,” but City officials later said there has been no confirmation as to whether the hotel would be built as a franchise development.
According to Somerton Hospitality’s materials, “The hotel will include a fitness center, swimming pool, laundry facilities, enhanced lobby, and a mart/vending area. All guest rooms will be apartment style rooms with kitchenettes to accommodate long term guests. We believe this is the ideal room type as it will keep government and seasonal workers in the city of Somerton, helping drive local business. In addition, we will provide convenient accommodations to Somerton High School visitors attending sports tournaments and other events. Typically, this is a large plot for a hotel, however we will need the extra parking space for work trucks and 18 wheelers.”
The Parkview Commerce Center is comprised of eight commercial lots, for which Somerton has been seeking development since 2021. A health clinic is currently under construction, and plans are being worked on for a 4th Avenue Gym and a possible grocery store.
Somerton Hospitality said if the permit process can be expedited, it would like to begin construction in Q3 or Q4 of this year. The construction timeline would then be 14-18 months, putting a possible opening in late 2026 or early 2027.
