The announced closure of a city park in San Luis is being taken as a sign expansion work at the San Luis I Port of Entry could begin soon.
An announcement by the U.S. General Services Administration said GSA will fence off Friendship Park before the modernization and expansion project begins.
The most recent status update on the GSA project website reads: “The master planning phase of the project is complete. The procurement of the design-build contract is underway and GSA is expecting to award the contract by the end of September 2022.”
The GSA announcement concerning Friendship Park targeted having the site enclosed on Sept. 8. Media reports from Sept. 18 show the fencing is not yet in place.
Once San Luis’ only park, Friendship Park saw its use decline in the 1990s as other facilities opened. The City relinquished the park last year to make room for the port of entry expansion.
San Luis I is ranked as the second-busiest port of entry on the Arizona-Sonora border. The expansion and modernization project will add eight new car lanes, expand the border crossing westward to include the former park land, and add four new pedestrian booths. (Source)
