EdgeConneX has filed a new plan to build a data center campus in east Mesa near Loop 202 and Elliot Road.
Local media reports say the company is requesting administrative and design reviews for a multi-phase development with three data hall buildings and an electrical substation on 93 acres in the Elliot Road Technology Corridor.
If fully built out, the total area would exceed 1.17MSF, according to the project narrative. Phase I would be a one-level 180KSF data hall (called the north wing), two electrical power blocks, a two-level/53.1KSF administrative core and the shell of a second data hall (the south wing) that is expected to generally mirror the north wing. Phase II would be the interior buildout for the second data hall. Phase III would add two buildings of 301KSF and 481KSF, the narrative says.
EdgeConneX is the project owner, and HKS, Inc. is the design firm. The article says the applications are in review by the City of Mesa as of Aug. 31.
A Previous Center was Proposed in 2017
Records show EdgeConneX owns eight total parcels at the proposed site, having purchased the land in 2017. The company had proposed an 182KSF data center with four data halls and a two-story office building on the property at 3261 S. Hawes Road in 2017. The Mesa City Council approved a development agreement for the project in Sept. 2017, according to the DATABEX project database.
That project never came to fruition, however. DATABEX shows a progress timeline that includes:
- Preliminary plans submitted and approved by the Mesa Design Review Board in Dec. 2017,
- A Dec. 28, 2017 note saying “Revisions required” and Fire inspection required for approval of a building permit,
- A Jan. 23, 2018 note from Mesa Building Permits saying revisions were still under review and there had been no inspections,
- A Jan. 24, 2018 note detailing a conversation with the general contractor at the time saying construction drawings were awaiting final approval and the contractor was awaiting notification from EdgeConneX to proceed with construction, and
- A conversation note with the general contractor in May 2018 saying the project was canceled to the best of their knowledge.
The article reporting the new development said EdgeConneX could not be reached for comment.
