The Scottsdale City Council has approved a request to amend an existing conditional use permit for site plan amendments to renovate the current low-budget Independence 47 Hotel at 7330 N. Pima Road into a luxury boutique hospitality destination called The George Hotel.
According to the Aug. 22 Council agenda, the request is to “allow for a new three-story hotel building, one-story gym/café, site improvements, and renovations and expansions to existing hotel buildings on a ±4.74- acre site with Multiple-Family Residential Planned Community District (R-5 PCD) zoning.”
The request was recommended for approval by the Planning and Zoning Commission in July.
The Independence 47 is currently under contract with the City to provide homeless shelter services through September of next year, according to media reports. An owner’s representative was quoted as saying the agreement will be honored and that renovations won’t start until after the 2024 baseball season.
The site had once been planned for a 100-room Hyatt Hotel. The new plan for the boutique George Hotel will be 84 rooms and will feature the addition of a second pool. One of the two buildings on-site will be demolished and replaced with a new 50-room building. An existing building will be renovated to house 34 rooms, as well as an expanded lobby.
The City Council voted unanimously to approve the request in the Aug. 22 meeting, with several members expressing appreciation for the redevelopment investment, according to follow-up news reports.
