Maricopa County will provide $10M in federal funds from the American Rescue Plan Act for two Phoenix affordable housing developments. Phoenix City Council recently voted to approve accepting the funds, according to news reports.
The first $5M allocation will go to Horizon on Villa, a 109-unit development on the site of the former A.L. Krohn Homes public housing project. The Phoenix Housing Department confirmed in an email to BEX Research staff that the City will co-partner with Gorman & Company on the development. Plans for the affordable and mixed-income development include units from one- to five bedrooms.
Construction is expected to begin next summer.
The other project will be converting a former 125-room Super 8 motel on Black Canyon Highway north of Northern Avenue into a supportive housing facility.
While that specific project is too small to be included in the DATABEX project database, it is in keeping with the City’s overall redevelopment and revitalization goals for the 27th Avenue and Northern area. These include the Project Haven senior redevelopment north of the Super 8 site and the Innovation 27 facility that is redeveloping a job skills and supportive services campus out of a long-vacant Kmart store.
Innovation 27 is scheduled for completion next fall.
