A limited service hotel is being planned for a vacant 2.9-acre site north of Baseline Road and east of Mesa Drive.
Gilmore Planning & Landscape Architecture, on behalf of developer, BG Edge, LLC, submitted plans to the City of Mesa and is requesting design review approval for the 122-room hotel called Woodspring Suites. The City of Mesa heard the request at its November 10th Design Review Board meeting.
The site intended for the hotel is located on the southern end of a larger 5.5-acre property. The northern portion of the property is expected to house other commercial projects that will include three PAD sites.
Woodspring Suites will be four stories and is, “characterized as an extended stay lodging brand by Choice Hotels,” according to the project’s narrative. “Guest Rooms will be for extended stay lodging use that provides affordable, clean and safe lodging to a broad demographic range with practical needs.”
Along with the 122 total guestrooms, the 48.2KSF building will be composed of a gym and a guest laundry area.
The building’s design will incorporate Woodspring’s corporate colors while complementing the existing surrounding architecture. “To reduce the massing and building scale, three primary materials are used, stone, stucco, and glass,” the narrative states. “Three colors of stucco are used to further break down the scale and add interest to the building façade.”
The landscaping will incorporate a, “lush desert plant palette” to provide year-round color, summer shade, buffers and to enhance the hotel’s entrance.
Access to the site will be from an entrance at Mesa Drive to the west and from Baseline Road to the south. A branded monument sign will be located on Baseline Road just west of the entrance. The hotel will provide approximately 131 parking spaces, including six handicap spaces, for guests.
The project still needs to go before the City of Mesa’s Planning Commission and City Council for approval.
