Environmentally Responsible Recyclers in Mesa is planning to more than double the functional space on its site at 730 E. Southern Ave. The current location includes office space, a warehouse and retail store. In its submissions to the city, the company cites a need for overall improvements and additional warehouse space to handle its volume of work.
If approved, the current 32KSF warehouse, office and retail area will be augmented with 40KSF of new warehouse and addition space behind and connected to the current structure. According to the documents, “The new addition will include warehouse space for expanding operations, a new employee break area and restrooms. The employee break area will feature large operable garage doors with a direct connection to outdoor space.”
The company is also planning a complete site redevelopment, with a new parking lot, sidewalks, commercial vehicle entrance and new landscaping and shade structures, among other features.
As a recycling center that promotes an eco-friendly business model, “Sustainable solutions will include all LED lighting throughout the entire facility, a water harvesting system for irrigating landscape and for on-site vegetable and gardening beds. Day lighting is also being incorporated in a way to maximize sunlight at the core of the warehouse while minimizing heat gain and promoting a healthy environment for employees.”
In the project narrative 648 Architecture prepared on the owners’ behalf, they state the expansion and renovation will not just improve operations but can be used as a role model for similar operations. “We are aiming to promote a facility remodel that not only the business owners would be proud of but would also be a case study for Mesa to showcase how a reasonable sustainable approach can be applied to the local built environment.”
The Mesa Planning and Zoning Board will meet to consider the proposal on June 20.
