Glendale City Council recently viewed two presentations on design elements for the Sahuaro Ranch Park Master Plan. In addition to the $24.3M core plan, two additions were discussed that could implement new features and alter the streetscape.
The City had put out a survey over three weeks this fall to solicit public input, placed QR codes in 11 spots throughout the park and held an open house. A total of 170 responses were collected.
Core components include sports fields, walking trails, lighting and signage improvements and general facility upgrades. The two alternative designs discussed include the addition of a $1.3M lily pond that would restore a historic feature in the area and a $2M set of streetscape improvements at 59th Avenue.
The lily pond addition proved popular during the work session, with both staff and Council members praising its historical and aesthetic value.
The streetscape improvements would pull the sidewalk away from the edge of the park and implement a “pony wall” that would draw attention to the park from the roadway.
If both alternatives are included in the final design, the project total would reach $27.6M. The City will need to identify funding sources that will be spread out over phases. A general obligation bond is possible, as Glendale does not currently have the authority to issue park bonds.
Next steps for the park plan include soliciting additional public input and more work on the overall design. Updated plans will then be brought back before Council for discussion and approval. (Source)
