A City of Flagstaff planner presented a proposal for a new site for a U.S. federal courthouse at 1535 W. Route 66 during a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.
If built, this would be the first federal courthouse in northern Arizona. Currently, if a Flagstaff resident is summoned to jury duty in a federal case, they must travel out of the area. A new federal courthouse would prevent that circumstance.
The proposed courthouse would be approximately 38.4KSF on an approximately 4.1-acre site. The three-story building would include offices, meeting spaces and two courtrooms.
The first floor would consist of meeting and security rooms. The second floor would have offices to accommodate workers. The third floor would house the two courtrooms. One court would be a U.S. Magistrate Court and the other would be a U.S. Senior District Court.
Civil engineering and surveying firm Shephard-Wesnitzer – An Ardurra Company, submitted the request for a conditional use permit for the courthouse. As the courthouse is federal, the mandated federal architecture and landscaping would be required. A landscaping plan was reportedly provided to the Commission that thoroughly detailed the exterior of the courthouse.
Currently, the area is zoned as a light industrial open zone. After discussion, the commissioners voted to approve the conditional use permit. (Source)
