Awards & Accolades
1. The Transportation Research Board (TRB) named ADOT’s I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project Ready to Rubble event as the winner of its 17th annual competition call for the “Communicating Concepts with the Public” category. The I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project’s Ready to Rubble event took place in April of 2023 and consisted of preparing the community for a full weekend closure of I-10 in both directions so that crews could take down three bridges over the freeway.
2. Engineering News-Record has awarded ADOT and project team Kiewit Infrastructure, West Co. with a 2023 Best Projects Award of Merit for the Southwest region. The project installed high-speed fiber-optic infrastructure along 67 miles of I-17 between Phoenix and McGuireville. The project is part of the state’s initiative to bring broadband internet access to more Arizonans.
Groundbreakings
3. Velocis, along with Sumitomo Corp. and KBC Advisors have broken ground on a $40M Summit at Surprise, a 245KSF spec industrial facility in Surprise. Deutsch Architecture Group is the Architect and FCL Builders is the General Contractor. The project is expected to wrap up in about a year.
4. Willmeng Construction) Willmeng Construction recently took part in a groundbreaking event in Southeastern Arizona to mark the start of construction on the new Clarence Wesley Health Center in Bylas, a 34KSF healthcare facility that will better serve the San Carlos Apache Tribe’s Bylas community. The new Health Center is designed by Cuningham Architects. The new location will replace the existing facility that was damaged by shifting soils and is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2025.
5. Central Arizona College has commenced construction on an expansion project that encompasses a new Allied Health building, a Skilled Trades building and renovation to the existing C building. Architekton is the design firm while McCarthy Building Companies is the General Contractor. Building C will be complete in March, 2024 while the Skilled Trades and Allied Health Building are scheduled to complete construction in January, 2025.
Progress Reports
6. The City of Scottsdale is well underway with its new Police and Fire Department Training Center. The $53M project will include a 4-5 story burn tower, office space and outdoor areas for technical rescues and hazardous materials training areas. The project is located east of Miller Road, just south of city limits.
7. The historic Phoenix Biltmore Golf Club is undergoing a $17M renovation project led by Sundt Construction. The project is not without its challenges, in particular, the team is addressing tight timelines, excavation issues and supply chain concerns.
8. Ari on Fourth Apartments in Tucson has opened their leasing office. Completion of the 13-story, 323-unit project is scheduled for July, 2024. The development team is a joint-venture of The Opus Group and Bridge Investment Group. Opus is also the design firm and general contractor on the project.
Completions
9. Adolfson & Peterson Construction along with the Flowing Wells School District and BWS Architects celebrated the grand opening of a community learning center in Tucson. This is AP’s most recent project completion in southern Arizona. Situated at 1440 W. Prince Rd., this 11,109-square-foot complex comprises an 8,373-square-foot professional development center and a 2,817-square-foot classroom building.
10. A.R. Mays Construction recently completed the $16.5M Sterling Grove Shops & Site in Surprise. The developer is Common Bond Development Group and PHNX Design is the Architect. The 20KSF retail development took roughly 14 months to build.
11. The City of Buckeye has completed Phase II of Sundance Park. The 38-acre expansion project included adding the city’s first public fishing lake and new amenities such as splash pads, lighted basketball courts, playgrounds, and parking. The project was designed by J2 Engineering and Environmental Design and built by Willmeng Construction. The city used almost $4M in grants to fund the project.
12. Cabana Bridges, a budget-friendly multifamily community in Tucson, has recently opened its doors. The 170KSF project was developed by Greenlight Communities who also acted as the General Contractor. WORKSBUREAU was the design firm.
13. PopStroke in Scottsdale is set to open the first week of October. PopStroke first announced in May 2021 that they would open two locations, one in Glendale, and one in Scottsdale. The Glendale location opened in May. PopStroke will have two 18-hole putting courses with a full bar and restaurant.
14. Willmeng Construction has completed construction of the new Gilbert Christian Schools Val Vista Campus.
15. The Town of Wickenburg has opened its new Fire Station 755. The 10.5KSF project on 4.7 acres was designed by Arrington Watkins Architects and built by Willmeng Construction.
16. KEAR Civil Corp has recently completed construction of a new fuel farm for the Sedona Airport. This $3.7M project included the installation of two new 15,000 gallons and one new 12,000 gallon of fuel double walled above ground storage tanks, new access platforms and stairs, bulk fuel loading skids, new fuel system piping and supports, a new concrete containment basin, new concrete and asphalt access drive, containment piping, storm drain piping, electrical and control systems. The project engineers were Dibble and Argus Consulting.
17. Willmeng Construction recently completed a 6-month renovation project to bring the new Buck & Rider to the Epicenter area of the Town of Gilbert. The restaurant spans more than 7KSF with a large outdoor bar and patio area.
18. The City of Flagstaff has completed upgrades to Buffalo Park, enabling more residents to access the public amenity. The 2-mile Nate Avery loop was resurfaced with smaller gravel among other improvements. The project was funded with a grant from the Arizona State Parks & Trails.
