Groundbreakings

1. Phoenix Union High School District recently began construction on the transformation of its Metro Tech High School campus, located at the NWC of Thomas Road and 19th Avenue. This $82M comprehensive, multi-phased project, designed by DLR Group and built by McCarthy Building Companies Inc., will feature more than 150KSF of renovations in addition to the construction of a new 22.5KSF competition gymnasium and new sports fields. Completion is expected before the 2027-2028 school year. The project will serve to modernize and reimagine the campus to enhance its 20 Career & Technical Education programs with real-world practice and public-facing service opportunities.
2. Work is underway on Sugar Hill on Stone, a $50M affordable housing development at 1910 N. Stone Ave. in Tucson. The project will deliver 66 units in three- and four-story buildings, with completion expected in October 2026. Gorman & Company is a co-developer alongside El Pueblo Housing Development, the nonprofit arm of Tucson’s Housing and Community Development Department.
3. The City of Maricopa will begin construction this fall on a long-awaited pedestrian bridge spanning the Union Pacific Railroad tracks west of John Wayne Pkwy. The $7.9M project will create a 244-ft concrete-and-metal structure with spiral staircases and elevators at each end. Funded by local and federal sources, the crossing will improve connections through the Heritage District. Work is expected to conclude by summer 2026.

4. Padeland is redeveloping the former LOOK Dine-In Cinemas in downtown Chandler into Arizona’s first indoor padel club. The 35KSF facility, located at 1 W. Chandler Blvd., will feature padel and pickleball courts, a wellness hub, coworking space and a brewery. Construction is underway, with completion expected in late 2025, and the company is subsequently expected to open more venues across the region.
5. Paradise Valley’s Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa is undergoing a $7M renovation of its meeting and event venues. The project includes updates to the 3.9KSF Views Ballroom, outdoor lawns and terraces and other resort spaces, with work expected to finish by the end of 2025. The 105-room resort sits on 53 acres at the base of Camelback Mountain.
Completions
6. Lowe’s has opened a 130KSF store at South Bridge Marketplace in Maricopa. Developer Thompson Thrift plans to begin construction later this year on a 54KSF second phase anchored by ALDI. The site was purchased in January 2024, with groundbreaking for the Lowe’s store in November 2024.

7. The Town of Superior has completed the $3.8M Panther Bridge on Panther Drive, providing all-weather access and faster emergency response. Funded with $2.5M from the State Legislature and a $1.3M Greater Arizona Development Authority loan, the project broke ground in February and opened July 21. The bridge replaces a low crossing prone to flooding.
8. The Town of Clarkdale will celebrate the grand opening of the Selna Mongini STEAM Park on Aug. 30. The $3M project redeveloped the Selna Ballfield and Mongini Park sites into an interactive space focused on science, technology, engineering, arts and math. The park was funded through State and federal grants, Town contributions and nearly $1M in local donations.
