    Awards & Accolades

    1. Achen-Gardner Construction announced the firm won three Project of the Year awards at the recent AZ APWA statewide conference. The company served as Construction Manager at Risk for all three projects. The categories, projects and owners were:

    • Environment Less Than $5M, Zone 1 – Transmission Main Assessment and Rehabilitation, Town of Gilbert;
    • Environment $5-25M, Chandler Heights Utility Relocations, City of Chandler;
    • Environment $25-75M; Waterline Replacement – Clark, University and Daley Park Neighborhoods, City of Tempe.

    2. The Pinal County Attorney’s Office in Florence won the APWA Project of the Year award in the $5-25M Structures category, last week at the APWA conference. The facility tells the story of how the County’s constrained budget was addressed by condensing the building footprint and maximizing energy efficiency through elements found in the desert. The project team included FCI Constructors, Logan Simpson Landscape and DLR Architects.

    Groundbreakings

    3. Construction is set to begin this month at Estrella Springs & Suncrest Vista at Canyon Trails, a 657-unit multifamily and senior affordable development from Dominium Management on nearly 29 acres at Van Buren Street and Cotton Lane in Goodyear.

    4. The Arizona Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin work this week on a highway improvement project on State Route 89A in Cottonwood. Crews will be doing pavement resurfacing work while also making sidewalk and gutter improvements and other repairs.

    5. The White Mountain Coalition Against Homelessness has begun work on Victory Village—a development of 10 small houses in Show Low to provide 90-day transitional housing for homeless members in the community.

    Progress Reports

    6. The Opus Group has announced it expects to complete construction at Deer Valley 30—a three-building, 356.6KSF north Phoenix speculative industrial development—in October.

    7. Tractor Supply Company has announced it anticipates a late October opening for its new store at Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway and Shea Way in Maricopa.

    Completions

    8. The Arizona Department of Transportation has completed paving work on a project that has improved nine miles of State Route 77/Oracle Road in the Tucson area. New pavement has replaced worn asphalt throughout the project area between Calle Concordia in Oro Valley and Miracle Mile in Tucson, and on Miracle Mile between Oracle Road and Interstate 10. The paving is part of a two-and-a-half-year, $34M project.

    9. Lakin Prep Academy has opened a new K-5 school at 12050 W. Broadway Road in Avondale. The school will add students in grades 6-8 in one-year increments as the surrounding community grows.

    10. The City of Maricopa announced the opening of The Bark at Copper Sky dog park located at the north end of the park. The Bark features an agility and precision course, a dog ramp, elevated steps and several jumps. Other amenities include two water fountains and several shade areas throughout, with more shade features planned in the future.
