1. Achen-Gardner Construction won the 2024 Public Works Project of the Year Award from the Arizona Chapter American Public Works Association for the Carefree Water Consolidation CMAR project. The award will be presented at the AZ APWA Statewide Conference at the El Conquistador Tucson.
Groundbreakings
2. Republic Services Inc. announced construction has started on its new headquarters, a $39.7M, 265.5KSF office project with a $23.1M, 276.8KSF parking garage in Phoenix. Ryan Companies is the general contractor. DAVIS is the architect.
3. The Arizona Department of Transportation announced Improvements at Loop 303 and Grand Avenue interchange have begun in Surprise. The work will extend a second lane for the off-ramp at Grand Avenue along with triple left and single right lane turns. Construction is expected to be completed in summer 2025.
Progress Reports
4. Due to new VA clinical infrastructure requirements and delays in getting materials, the new Veterans Clinic in Lake Havasu City has had its opening pushed from mid-August to October or November. The new facility is five times larger than the existing clinic, offering five care teams with each caring for approximately 900 patients.
5. Achen-Gardner Construction announced the Lichfield Square Infrastructure Improvements CMAR project is progressing. The crew has installed landscaping for a future amphitheater area, colored concrete, decorative pavers and a new 1,300SF restroom.
Completions
6. Phoenix Children’s held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new $195M, 175KSF hospital in Glendale. The campus also includes a 45KSF multi-specialty clinic. The new hospital will serve up to 72,000 pediatric patients a year. Kitchell was the general contractor. HKS was the architect.
7. EDP Renewables North America LLC announced the completion of Brittlebush Solar Park, a 200-megawatt power park in Coolidge. EDP partnered with Salt River Project and Meta where Brittlebush will support SRP’s decarbonized power generation portfolio providing affordable and reliable energy and running Meta’s data center in Mesa.
8. Housing for Hope, an affiliate of Catholic Charities Community Services, announced the grand opening of Mesquite Terrace Apartments, a 297-unit low-income apartment community in Phoenix. The community offers one-, two- and three-bedroom units ranging between 575SF to 1,020SF.
9. Ascent Cos. and Vanderbuild opened Amavida Marana, a 200-unit apartment community in Marana. The community offers one-, two- and three-bedroom units. Bryten Real Estate Partners is the property manager.
10. Nadaburg Unified School District held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Mountainside High School, a 67.7KSF education campus in Wittman. The campus features a 43KSF classroom building with administration and nursing offices, conference rooms and a media/library room. The campus also has a 25KSF gymnasium building with locker rooms, weight rooms, training rooms for sports medicine and a fully furnished kitchen. CHASSE Building Team was the general contractor. EMC2 was the architect.
11. The $24M Mel and Enid Zuckerman Center for Health and Medical Careers, a two-story, 50KSF medical career center, has opened at The Bridges Campus in Tucson. Construction was done by a joint LLC partnership between Bourn Properties, BLF Construction Companies and Pima JTED.
12. A.R. Mays Construction announced the completion of the $7M DICK’s Sporting Goods – Surprise, a 49.3KSF retail store in Surprise. DICK’s Sporting Goods is the developer. Fox Design Group is the architect. Construction took seven months to complete.
13. The Maricopa Police Department held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the City’s new 32.2KSF police headquarters. The new facility is nearly twice the size of the previous location, which will now be converted to other uses.
14. W.E. O’Neil Construction announced the completion of a hangar for Jet Aviation with NetJets located at Scottsdale Airport. The facility includes a 29.4KSF hangar and more than 12KSF of conditioned terminal and office space. It features a private boarding lounge, VIP conference room and a patio.
15. Agate Construction announced the completion of the expansion of Advanced Materials Technologies, LLC’s manufacturing facility at 7030 W. Oakland St. in Chandler. The ground-up expansion included elaborate site work and landscaping, involving building components such as masonry, concrete, steel, roofing, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire sprinkler systems and finishes. Agate also provided preconstruction and design assistance services on the expansion; it took five months to complete.
