It’s blessedly rare that scandals like Legacy Sports Park/Bell Bank Park/Legacy Park: Arizona’s Premiere Sports & Entertainment Complex’s current financial woes—including millions of dollars in delinquent payments to contractors and subs—befall the Arizona Architecture/Engineering/Construction community.
Last week, The Arizona Republic published an extensively detailed look into the history of the project, its current financial troubles and the complicated and worrisome financial history of Randy Miller, the person who first envisioned the multi-use park as his “legacy” and brought it to fruition.
At around 6,500 words, the piece is longer than most in-depth magazine articles. It will take about 20 minutes for the average reader to make their way through it.
It is, however, comprehensive it is examination. We think it’s necessary for reading for anyone interested in or involved with the project.
We don’t often promote other outlets’ work, choosing instead to write our own summaries with links to the originals if our readers want more detail. Given the uncertain future of the park, this week’s bankruptcy filing by Legacy Cares Inc., the nature of the financing bond issuance through the Arizona Industrial Development Authority, the millions and millions of dollars still owed to contractors and subs, and the lack of any immediately foreseeable resolution, however, we’re making an exception.
It’s a story we wish we had had the time and resources to write, but the more important thing is that someone did.
