    Awards & Accolades

    1. The Arizona Masonry Council selected the City of Flagstaff Municipal Court Facility as a winner in their “30th Annual Excellence in Masonry Architectural Awards” competition. The new Flagstaff Municipal Court is a three-story, 40KSF, $19.5M, Green Globes certified facility. Serving as Design-Build Contractor, Kinney Construction Services, Inc. (KCS) worked collaboratively with the City of Flagstaff and the architect, CGL Companies. Design engineering support was provided by Energy Systems Design, Inc. (ESD), Caruso Turley Scott (CTS), and Shepard Wesnitzer, Inc. (SWI).

    2. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has been accredited by Airports Council International (ACI) for providing a safe airport experience for all travelers. The ACI Airport Health Accreditation program requires a thorough assessment of an airport’s cleaning and safety practices. Those practices are then measured against the international industry standard. In order to receive the ACI Airport Health Accreditation, Sky Harbor was evaluated in several areas including: Cleaning and disinfection; cleaning products used; staff training; ventilation and air flow; availability of hand sanitizer; the use of touchless technology and more.

    Groundbreakings

    3. CBRE announced that McKinney Investments, Westport Capital Partners and AEW began construction on Latitude 303 Logistics, an 897.3KSF, Class A industrial development at the SEC of the Loop 303 and Glendale. The project is anticipated to be completed in Q1 2022.

    4. ADOT is set to start the $3.5M Rockfall Mitigation project along SR 80 northwest of Bisbee in mid-August. The project will involve excavating rock from slopes along SR 80, which will create a wider “clear zone” on both sides of the highway to decrease the risk of debris landing on the roadway. This safety improvement will take place near the intersection of SR 90 near Pintek Road, at milepost 334.

    5. Sun State Builders and MyDogToys.com broke ground on a 95.4KSF office/warehouse building at the SEC of 137th Avenue and Test Drive, Goodyear. The project broke ground on August 1st and is expected to be completed on March 1st, 2022. Balmer Architectural Group is the design firm.

    6. Catholic Charities, through its Housing for Hope, Inc. affiliate, and Trinity Development, LLC recently broke ground on Mesquite Terrace, a 297-unit, three-building multifamily affordable housing community in Phoenix. The $63.6M project is expected to be completed at the end of 2023. The first building is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. Tofel Dent Construction, Inc. is the general contractor and Architectural Resource Team is the design firm.

    7. Greenlight Communities is set to break ground this month on Cabana Southern, a new $42M, 250-unit multifamily development at the SWC of Crismon and Southern Avenues in Mesa. The project is set to welcome its first residents in Fall 2022. WORKSBUREAU is the design firm and Greenlight Communities is the general contractor.

    Progress Reports

    8. The TSG Foundation project is underway in Cave Creek and is anticipated to be complete by May 2022. The Foundation building is infused with a sense of health and wellness that leverages the natural environment by creating meaningful and useful connections to the outdoors. Visitors are welcomed into a large lobby space with access into a modest 3KSF Sanctuary space that opens up to the north. Through the building’s passive and active energy strategies the Foundation is striving to be a Net Zero Energy and Net Zero Water Certified Building through the Living Building Challenge. The facility is designed by Orcutt | Winslow and is being constructed by 180 Degrees Design + Build.

    9. Phase I of construction of Maricopa Unified School District’s second high school is advancing. Despite recent heavy rains, construction crews have cleared and graded the site, secured the site perimeter, established the site field office, and established building pads for the two-story classroom building and cafeteria/gym. The yet-to-be-named, $42M high school is scheduled to open for the 2022-23 school year. Orcutt | Winslow is the design firm and Chasse Building Team is the general contractor.

    10. Brookfield Residential announced its latest Alamar master-planned community in Avondale has nearly sold out of its first phase of 461 homes at an accelerated pace and is quickly preparing for the second community phase to open in late 2021. Its upcoming Alamar Park, an expansive 40-acre park scheduled to open to the public in early 2022. A joint venture with the City of Avondale, the regional park will feature baseball/softball and multi-use fields, tennis and pickleball courts, playgrounds, a lake, splash pad, amphitheater, dog park and much more.

    11. During a stakeholder earnings call on Tuesday, August 3rd, Nikola Motor Company laid out developments from the past few months, updating progress on its Coolidge and Ulm, Germany, manufacturing plants, and continued to express optimism, despite the difficulty securing components. The Coolidge manufacturing facility is in the process of building out the Phase 1 assembly expansion area, which will provide additional manufacturing capacity, with the goal of completing that by the end of 2021. The manufacturing capacity at the Coolidge facility is expected to be 2,400 by the end of the year, and the Phase 2 build-out could begin by January of 2022. Capacity is expected to jump to 20,000 trucks by the end of 2023. Walbridge is the design firm and general contractor.

    Completions

    12. Mark-Taylor announced the opening of Hudson on Farmer, a six-story, 171-unit urban community of brand new, modern apartment homes near Arizona State University (ASU) in downtown Tempe. Ankrom Moisan Architects, Inc. was the design firm and Calcon Constructors was the general contractor.

    13. The Sheraton Phoenix Downtown hotel has unveiled extensive renovations that have been worked on over the past year since its closure last March to mark its reopening. Changes range from a fully reworked community space to over 1000 rooms that received a visual makeover. The hotel also continued to add and enforce precautions and regulations to prevent further spread of the virus, and to keep guests that come to stay at the hotel safe.

    14. Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, 5555 W. Thunderbird Road, Glendale, completed a new 12-bed inpatient pediatric behavioral health unit for patients ages 5 to 12. This unit will begin accepting patients later this month.
