Los Angeles-based startup CarbonCapture is collaborating with Arizona State University to establish a regional carbon dioxide (CO2) capture hub in the Southwest United States. They are seeking funding from the U.S. Department of Energy to conduct an engineering and design study for the project. The hub would span multiple sites in Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico, utilizing advanced technologies developed by CarbonCapture and ASU‘s CarbonCollect. The Arizona site, co-located with Proton Green’s helium plant at St. Johns Dome, is expected to cover extensive acreage and run on renewable energy sources.
If discussions with the Department of Energy proceed as planned, the design phase could begin by November, with a two-year study period following. Subsequently, the build phase, estimated at $500M, would aim to commence. Although specific job figures are yet to be determined, the project is likely to create a substantial number of jobs, benefiting nearby communities and attracting further investments.
This initiative aligns with efforts in the Greater Phoenix area to transition to a “New Photon Economy,” focusing on renewable energy and attracting climate tech companies. ASU President Michael Crow sees this partnership as an opportunity for Arizona to become a prominent center for climate technology innovation in the United States. (Source)
