Road projects planned under Gilbert’s $515M 2021 voter-approved bond are progressing, but construction cost inflation means the funds will only cover 48 of the originally planned 57.
In addition to increased construction costs, the uncertain status of the Proposition 400 Maricopa County transportation sales tax renewal means projects that were scheduled for later in the five-year planning cycle could experience additional delays to make sure the top priority projects are completed.
Town staff is working to secure additional regional and federal funding, according to Gilbert Public Works Director Jessica Marlow. If the Prop 400 renewal legislation is approved and allowed to go to voters, it could pay for part of the projects on the list.
To date, Gilbert has issued approximately $200M of the $515M bond fund. The rest will be issued when the Town is ready to move forward with projects. Marlow said several projects have completed design and could begin construction late this year, but officials are trying to stagger construction to avoid inconveniences to residents.
Four major projects that have seen marked cost increases are:
- Guadalupe Road reconstruction from Arizona Avenue to McQueen Road: Increased from $9M to $14M;
- Val Vista Lakes pavement improvement: Increased from $47.5M to $62.7M;
- Ocotillo Bridge connecting Higley and Greenfield roads over Gilbert Regional Park: Increased from $67.2M to $111M; and
- Vaughn Avenue extension in the Heritage District: Increased from $23.1M to $33.6M. (Source)
