Once a notion so contentious it sparked a lawsuit and a series of hostile back-and-forth exchanges, the cities of Tempe and Phoenix have now come to an agreement that will allow the eventual development of apartments on land near Priest Drive and Rio Salado Parkway. The 46-acre site was once planned for a major mixed-use development and arena as home for the Arizona Coyotes. Tempe City Council approved the proposal, but Phoenix was strongly opposed, citing the potential for future negative impacts on Phoenix-Sky Harbor International Airport operations. By Arizona Department of Transportation The Arizona Department of Transportation announced an Executive Leadership Team to guide the continued study of potential passenger rail service between the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas. The group is composed of the Governor’s Office, ADOT and metropolitan planning organizations for Maricopa, Pima and Pinal counties: the Maricopa Association of Governments, Pima Association of Governments and Sun Corridor Metropolitan Planning Organization. By Roland Murphy for AZBEX On Nov. 30, the Maricopa County Republican Committee filed a lawsuit in Maricopa County Superior Court seeking to decertify passage of the Proposition 479 renewal of the Maricopa County half-cent transportation tax from the November election. The lawsuit names Arizona Secretary of State Aaron Fontes, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors and State Treasurer John Allen as defendants. Maricopa County is requesting a dismissal of the complaint. Atlantic Developments & Investments, Inc. requested the rezoning from estate residential to high density residential.
