2023 will be a busy year for freeway-related projects in the Phoenix area as more than $1B in Arizona Department of Transportation freeway improvement plans either get underway or continue work already in progress on I-10, I-17, Loop 101 and U.S. 60.
A brief snapshot of the projects follows, broken down by freeway.
I-10
- SR-85 to Verrado Way: Adding a third lane in each direction and rebuilding the interchanges at Miller Road and Watson Road. Completion is expected this summer.
- I-10 Broadway Curve Improvements: 11 miles of improvements between Loop 202 and I-17, including widening lanes in both directions, reconstructing the SR 143 interchange, and several bridge replacements. Completion is expected in fall 2024.
- Pavement Improvement – Riggs Road to Gila River Bridges: Pavement rehabilitation in both directions. Construction is expected to begin in March and conclude in July.
I-17
- Frontage Road Drainage Improvement: Improve drainage for storm runoff from Greenway, Thunderbird, Cactus and Peoria crossings to reduce freeway flooding. Construction is expected to conclude this year.
- Anthem Way to Black Canyon City: Widening 15 miles of freeway, modifying 12 bridges and building eight miles of flex lanes. Construction started last year and is targeted for completion in 2025.
- Dunlap to Deer Valley Road Pavement: Replacing existing asphalt and repairing concrete pavement for a smooth surface. Construction should finish this year.
- Van Buren to Anthem Way: Installing Intelligent Transportation System infrastructure for high speed fiber optic service, including real-time traffic information, ramp metering and CCTV surveillance. Construction is expected to conclude in late 2023.
Loop 101
- Screen Wall Near 16th Street: Building a 1,800-foot-long wall with heights between 14 and 16 feet. Construction will start mid-year and last approximately nine months.
- Princess Drive to Shea Blvd. Widening: Adding one lane in both directions, rebuilding the Frank Lloyd Wright interchange and making minor changes to other interchanges and cross streets. Construction is planned to begin this fall.
U.S. 60
- Loop 101 to Loop 202 Pavement Rehabilitation: Removing and replacing asphalt and repairing concrete pavement for a smooth surface. Construction should last until July. (Source)
