Arizona State University and the Arizona Coyotes are negotiating an agreement that would let the hockey team play at ASU’s new arena while it works to find or create a permanent home.
The City of Glendale opted not to renew the Coyotes’ lease at Gila River Arena after multiple issues between the two parties over the past several years. The Coyotes are planning to build a stadium and entertainment district on 46 City-owned acres in Tempe, but the proposal has encountered opposition from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport officials and is still under review and evaluation by Tempe.
Even if accepted and approved for development, building the nearly $2B Coyotes complex would take several years.
ASU’s new 5,000-seat stadium is currently under construction. Completion is targeted for December.
Media reports state the Coyotes are seeking a three-year arrangement with ASU and venue manager Oak View Group Facilities, with an option for fourth year if needed.
The Coyotes would need to build their own $15M-$20M dressing room and team training spaces, and the deal would have to gain approval from the Arizona Board of Regents. (Source)
