By Nucor Corporation Nucor, the largest steel and steel products producer in the U.S., announced today it is investing $100M to add a new electric arc furnace melt shop at its existing bar mill in Kingman. The melt shop, which will have the capacity to produce 600,000 tons annually, is expected to be operational by 2024 and create approximately 140 new jobs. Nucor chose to build a new melt shop at Nucor Steel Kingman as it is a rolling mill that converts steel billets into coiled wire rod and rebar but lacks a melt shop. The building design and materials are planned in keeping with the midcentury modern aesthetic of existing buildings in the area. A shaded streetscape is intended to encourage multi-modal transit use. By Associated Builders and Contractors The not seasonally adjusted national construction unemployment rate plunged 3.8% in June 2022 from June 2021, down from 7.5% to 3.7%. Meanwhile, all 50 states had lower unemployment rates over the same period, according to a state-by-state analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data released by Associated Builders and Contractors. Ten states had an estimated construction unemployment rate under 2%; the highest unemployment rate was 6.5% in New Mexico. The Yuma City Council has approved a plan to use $2.73M in American Rescue Plan Act monies for affordable rental housing through an allocation received by the Yuma County HOME Consortium. Yuma’s Neighborhood Services Division is the Consortium’s administrative agent. The Consortium will seek a development partner to help it build up to 90 units in a single project that will serve all of Yuma County. By Associated Builders and Contractors The U.S. economy contracted at a 0.9% annualized rate in the second quarter of 2022, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Continuing its efforts to bring inflation back under control, The Federal Reserve raised interest rates another 75 basis points last week, matching the June hike as the largest increase since 1994. In its July policy statement, the Fed acknowledged economic activity continues to slow signs of slowing.
