The City of Yuma is forging ahead with the $14.2M Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex, seeking a design firm to flesh out plans for the six-field softball hub with a targeted opening date of July 2017, despite questions raised by some about the project’s cost versus the benefit.

City Parks and Recreation Director Debbie Wendt said building a complex tailored to the needs of softball and other sports which can’t be easily accommodated at the Ray Kroc Baseball Complex makes sense, given the drawing power of the sports among residents and visitors alike.

The city for now is moving forward on the plan to build the complex north of Yuma Palms Regional Center, at the northwest corner of Pacific Avenue and 8th Street.

The 49-acre, $1.6M land purchase from local hotel owners John and Yvonne Peach was approved by the City Council unanimously in June 2013.

Wendt said Yuma officials have been batting around the idea of a softball complex for about a decade as different parts of the city’s recreation plans were built out.
