Two Retail Chains Choose Maricopa

By Brian Wright for the Maricopa Monitor

Maricopa can expect an Aaron’s and a 99-Cent Only store in its near future, as the planning and zoning commission approved site plans for the two retailers lat week. The pair are part of phase II of Edison Place, which is located at the intersection of Arizona 347 and Edison Road. The site is currently home to a Big-O Tires, (above) which opened in October 2009.

Maricopa will have two new shopping options once a business development plan is complete.

Property at the southeast corner of Az. 347 and Edison Rd. will eventually be home to Aaron’s, a lease-to-own furniture, appliances and electronics store, and a 99-Cent Only store.

The Maricopa Planning and Zoning Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to recommend approval to the City Council for the site plan, landscape, and other plans for proposed phase II and III development of the property, named Edison Place.

Phase I of the Edison Place project was Big O Tires, which opened in October 2009. Phase II will include a 15K SF 99 Cent Only store and a 7K SF Aaron’s. Phase II will also include sidewalk improvements at the southeast corner of Arizona 347 and Edison Road. An internal pedestrian path, parallel to Arizona 347, will link to the Edison Road sidewalk.

Also discussed at the meeting by development services director Brent Billingsley was the beginning of construction at the City Complex site, which will be home to a new city hall and police station. Although the date is not certain, Billingsley is hopeful the construction will start July 9. The city council has to award a contract at its June 19 meeting before the project can move forward.
