Banner Estrella Med Center Plans to Break Ground on a $151M Expansion

By Eric Jay Toll for The Arizona Builder’s Exchange

The West Valley’s Banner Estrella Medical Center plans an August groundbreaking for a $151M expansion adding 144 patient beds and 200 new jobs. SmithGroup JJR is the Architect of Record, McCarthy is the GC for the project.

Fed by two West Valley Banner clinics opening in the next year, the expansion attaches a second six-story tower to the existing 214 beds hospital with about 1,500 employees at Thomas Road and Loop 101.  The clinic in Verrado opens this year and Estrella Ranch will open in 2013, both ahead of the 2015 hospital expansion completion.

The expansion is the second announced in recent weeks, following Dignity Health Care’s acquisition of 35 Glendale Westgate acres for a clinic and small hospital campus on Loop 101 about six miles north of the Banner facility.

Banner’s plans call for three new operating rooms, a cardiac catheterization lab, two patient-bed floors and additional space for medical imaging and patient parking. Back office administration and patient support departments will shift to the new tower. The move opens space for an increased neonatal intensive care unit and expansion of the hospital’s emergency center.

Healthcare development is a driving factor in the Valley economy. Banner has four clinics under construction in the East Valley and plans an expansion of both the MD Anderson Cancer Center and Banner Gateway medical complex in Gilbert. Phoenix Community College plans a fall solicitation to remodel the old 3rd Ave. Wells Fargo data center into a life science and nursing training complex. AT Still University has expanded its medical campus residency program in Mesa, and both new Mesa colleges, Westminster and Benedictine, are planning life science and bioscience education tracks.
