$2.1M Improvements to Camelback Trailhead Sought

By Connie Cone Sexton and Philip Haldiman for The Arizona Republic

The traffic and parking jam at Camelback Mountain’s popular Echo Canyon Trail that fueled frustration between hikers and residents should greatly ease if several proposals are adopted by the city.

Under the staff recommendations under consideration, the city would:

  • Build a second road to the trailhead in order to keep park visitors off the road used by residents of Echo Canyon Estates.
  • Construct a roundabout on McDonald Drive at the entrance to the park.
  • Expand the number of regular parking spaces to 128.

The improvements are estimated at $2.1 million and, if approved by the Phoenix City Council, would be funded by the city’s Parks Capital Improvement Program.
